Arthur Carter: Orthogonals is a series of painted sculptures currently on view at the New Britain Museum of American Art. Carter’s work may suggest the influence of Piet Mondrian or Josef Albers, but the Roxbury artist’s background— which includes being the founder and publisher of the Litchfield County Times and The New York Observer—has also influenced his work, which appears to relate to a newspaper layout. Featured in the exhibition are seven examples from the Orthogonals series (including Untitled, 2008, aluminum painted red and blue, 33 x 33 inches, pictured), and nine other related reliefs and works on paper created between 2008 and 2010 that exemplify the artist’s fascination with number theory, color purity and minimalist logic and process. The exhibit runs through Nov. 27.
